On August 16, in the historical part of the city of Sumy, at the Central city (Petropavlivskyi) cemetery, at the place of burial of the well-known Sumy resident, legendary sprinter, two-time champion of the Olympic Games, Volodymyr Golubnychy, a monument opening ceremony was held.

The project of the monument was developed by the author's team under the leadership of the architect, active member of the Academy of Architecture, Volodymyr Bykov.

The concept of the ancient Greek column, which the ancient Greeks built in honor of the victors, was taken as the basis of the monument. The author's team proposed a kind of revival of Olympic traditions. It is crowned with a capital of five rings, symbolizing not only the sign of the Olympic Games, but also the five Olympiads in which Volodymyr Golubnychy participated.
