As Volodymyr BYKOV, Head of the Department of Urban Planning and Architecture of the Sumy Oblast, said, the purpose of this competition is to popularize the Academy of Architecture among students majoring in "Architecture" and to search for future academicians among young people.
Volodymyr Bykov told why the idea arose to take the subject of the reconstruction of Independence Square in Sumy for a closed student competition: "I am a corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Architecture. And at one of the plenary sessions, we discussed the possibilities of popularizing the academy among students. They decided to hold a project competition. And taking into account the cooperation of the academy with the Sumy regional state administration, within the framework of which before the start of the war we were going to hold a large-scale open All-Ukrainian competition among well-known architects of Ukraine regarding the reconstruction of Independence Square in the city of Sumy, I suggested using ready-made materials for holding a student competition."
Volodymyr Bykov proposal was supported by the board of the academy and a competition was announced among students of higher educational institutions majoring in "Architecture" regarding the reconstruction of Independence Square in Sumy.
"I want to reassure colleagues who are probably worried that they were not invited to participate in the competition: this is a competition for student projects. It is not feasible. Our main task is to popularize the academy, he emphasized. - Also, I would like architectural students from all over Ukraine to know about Sumy. Therefore, in the materials, we provided historical information about Sumy Oblast and Sumy."
As the President of the Ukrainian Academy of Architecture, People's Architect of Ukraine, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in the field of architecture, doctor of architecture, professor, head of the Department of Fundamentals of Architecture and Architectural Design of KNUBA Oleg Sleptsov reported, 60 applications from students and student teams have been submitted for participation in the competition. Dnipro, Kyiv, Poltava, Odesa, Lviv, Kharkiv, Chernivtsi, Kropyvnytskyi, Zaporizhzhia. The largest number of contestants is from Odesa and Kyiv.
"We called our competition a blitz competition, because we do not require students to take into account all the nuances that should be in an "adult" competition, in particular, the capabilities of the same tablets. That is, it should be an idea, a sketch... We are looking for our academicians among these students, Oleg Sleptsov emphasized. - By the way, the teachers themselves, who teach students, wanted to participate in this competition. But we refused them. Because, I repeat, this is a student competition." The deadline for submitting competitive projects is 06/15/2023. The presentation of the competitive works will be in the capital of Ukraine, on the territory of Sofia of Kyiv.
